12-Month Preparation Timeline

Months 1-3: Foundation

  • Start reading newspapers daily (The Hindu or Indian Express)
  • Make notes on current affairs from day one
  • Understand the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly
  • Choose your optional subject and gather basic material

Months 4-6: Building Knowledge

  • Move to standard reference books (Laxmikanth for Polity, Spectrum for Modern History)
  • Start answer writing practice (2-3 answers per week)
  • Continue current affairs compilation (monthly magazines)
  • Begin optional subject preparation
  • Take chapter-wise tests for Prelims

Months 7-9: Integration

  • Integrate current affairs with static topics
  • Increase answer writing (daily 1-2 answers)
  • Start full Prelims mock tests
  • Revise optional subject thoroughly
  • Practice essay writing (1 essay per week)

Months 10-12: Revision & Mains Focus

  • Intensive revision of all GS papers
  • Daily answer writing (4-5 answers)
  • Full Mains mock tests under exam conditions
  • Current affairs revision (last 12 months)
  • Optional subject mock tests

Essential Books for UPSC

  • History: India's Struggle for Independence (Bipan Chandra), Spectrum Modern India
  • Polity: Indian Polity by M Laxmikanth

Using Unacademy for UPSC

  • Foundation Courses: Start with Unacademy foundation batches for complete syllabus coverage
  • Current Affairs: Daily current affairs classes help maintain consistency
  • Answer Writing: Participate in daily answer writing initiatives
  • Test Series: Unacademy Prelims and Mains test series for practice
  • Optional Subject: Specialized courses for popular optional subjects
  • Interview Guidance: Mock interviews and personality development sessions

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading Too Many Books: Stick to limited quality resources. Reading 10 books on one topic is less effective than reading 2 books thoroughly.
  • Neglecting Current Affairs: Current affairs is not a separate section - it integrates with all GS papers.
  • Ignoring Answer Writing: Mains is about articulation, not just knowledge. Start writing answers from month 3.
  • Inconsistent Newspaper Reading: Daily newspaper reading is non-negotiable. Don't try to cover it through monthly compilations alone.
  • Over-Reliance on Coaching: Coaching guides you, but self-study is irreplaceable. No coaching can substitute for your own effort.
